Using Furring Strips on Decking
Radiant barriers are typically integrated into residential and commercial structures using two primary methods:
For existing homes, rolls of perforated foil are stapled directly across the underside of the roof rafters. The foil faces downward into the attic space.
On Top of Roof Decking (Metal & Tile Roofing): In specialized roofing systems utilizing cross-battens or counter-battens (common with tile or standing-seam metal roofs), heavy-duty roofing foil is rolled out directly over the waterproofing underlayment but below the battens.
This creates a critical air gap between the hot metal/tile exterior and the reflective foil layer, keeping the underlying roof deck up to 30°F cooler.
